I launched a new podcast last week called I Made This. Every week I talk to cool, creative people to find out how they made their “Big Idea” a reality in realistic ways. We’ve already talked to improvisers, a cookie artist, comic book and film writers, and the curators of a Big Foot museum (coming soon).
I’m doing this podcast for a few reasons.
For one, I’m in the process of founding Do Anything after leaving my job at Hearst Television 41 days ago. I want Do Anything to become a virtual playhouse where creative people can collaborate online. I’m also building tools, training, and platforms for creatives just like me. With that mission, a podcast where I ask people how they made their dreams come true seemed like a great first step. Since I’m in the process of building a new business and community, I’m getting a lot out of sitting back, listening, and learning from smart and talented people.
This show is also a great excuse to chat with old friends. I’ve been a creative professional for pretty close to 15 years at this point, and I’ve run into a ton of cool people pursuing their passions while I pursued mine. As you get older, it gets harder to make time for a phone call. Interviewing them on a podcast is a great way to get it on the schedule. I’ve loved reconnecting with people who fueled my creative dreams and aspirations.
Lastly, an interview show seemed like a good way to define myself to old and new friends. While I tend to sit back and listen to my guests on this show, I interject stories my creative journey and discuss my creative philosophy whenever I can. I’ve been so many different versions of myself to so many groups of people over the past 10 years, I’m looking at this as a good opportunity to redefine my personal brand. I’ve let people define that for me a lot in the past, and this show is the first step in taking control of my message.
I hope you’ll get as much out of the new show as I have. That’s kind of the point, anyway.
