Greetings from Everly Heights,

New year, new season! I’ve been writing fresh episodes of Everly Heights Tales since Season 1 launched several months ago. Season 2 starts today, and the first episode revisits a character you’ve heard before: Mr. Matheson, but his friends call him Bill. You might remember his turn in Welcome, Freshmen as the helpful math teacher. Maybe you recall him managing the community center in The Half-Life of Hand-Me-Downs. Now, he’s taking center stage.

Mr. Matheson’s Long Division

High school teacher Bill Matheson lives for the logic of math, but his personal equation has become a mess of negative numbers. As the town’s resident workaholic, Mr. Matheson juggles teaching high school algebra, the daily grind at The Koffee Shop, and programming lights at Cornerstone Theater. Despite double-checking his work, he’s successfully calculated himself right out of his own marriage! Faced with an empty house and a fresh opportunity from the local tax man, Mr. Matheson must decide if he’s ready to stop “showing his work” and finally solve life’s most delicate equation by tweaking some variables. Will an optimistic man crack under the weight of his own long division?

In the aftershow, creator Bill Meeks breaks down the math behind the real-world work-life balance struggles that fueled the script and highlights the return of Season 1 favorites like Michael Special and Nosloo the Great.

NEXT TIME: Things get W.E.I.R.D.E. in Everly Heights!

It was a joy to work with Kristyna Zaharek (Angel Matheson/Brenda from the Arts Board) and Sean Siegler (Michael Special /Koffee Shop Customer) again. Make sure you hit them up if you need a voice in your project! Trivia: This episode was recorded in the same session as Abby’s Very Special Christmas.

This episode is an adaptation of Mr. Matheson’s Arithme-TIPS, the Everly Heights web comic I made a couple years back. There is a ton of Everly Heights world building in the comic, so it is still worth a read after you listen to the episode. Speaking of…

I’ve rebranded our Holiday Bundle from last year to an “Everly Heights Welcome Pack.” It still contains 10 ebooks (including the full run of Mr. Matheson’s Arithme-TIPS), two professional fonts, software, and Photoshop/Illustrator templates to make your own comic book. Best of all, it helps me keep the Everly Lights on.

Well, that’s it for this week. And remember, even if you run away from your problems by stepping through a portal to another dimension, Everly Heights will still find a way to pull you back. And I’ll be here, waiting for you. See you next week with a brand new tale!
