I’m pleased as punch to bring you the second Everly Heights story I ever wrote… next week. This week, we’re presenting a prequel to that story I wrote back in January. Before we get to the modern-day Last Chance Detective Agency, we have to look back to the past in a fun kid detective story featuring the best of Everly Heights.

The Best Chance Detective Agency: Danny Chance Starts Up

Thirteen-year-old Danny Duplas is tired of being just a normal kid. Armed with a metric “ship ton” of dust-covered Hardy Boys books and a signboard in his dad’s driveway, he rebrands himself as “Danny Chance, the boy detective with the freaky good luck.” From a Swiss Army knife buried in a box of Super Mario cereal to a whirlwind encounter with national media icon “Ask Marilyn” vos Savant, Danny outsmarts local delinquents in a bid to earn his cynical cop father’s respect. Danny Chance is on the case.

NEXT TIME: Years later, Danny Chance is all out of gas and stuck in his dad’s driveway. When his former partner returns in shame, a childhood promise forces them to confront changing times, a fractured legacy, and the secret his cop father took to the grave.

SPONSOR

This episode has a stacked cast, including the voices of Dogboy Nathan Beatty as Danny Chance and his dad, newcomer to Everly Heights Ryanne Bennett as Melody Trainor the co-lead in the next two episodes, and Samuel Lewis + Sean Weiland who have played several roles over the last year. Finally, Alex Mechanic returns to play Marylin vos Savant, columnist for Parade Magazine and world’s smartest woman.

If you enjoy this offbeat love letter to kid detective stories and want more, I can’t help you. Next week, we’re flashing ahead from the 90s to the modern day to deconstruct all the tropes we set up this week in an adaptation of the Danny Chance TV pilot I wrote back in 2020. It feels more like Barry than this week’s Encyclopedia Brown homage, and pays off a ton of stuff I set up in this week’s episode.

See you next week for the next chapter in the Danny Chance saga.
