As much as I went in wanting to like Wonder Woman 84, I had issues. I thought they did a great job on the 80s stuff, and the first sequence in the mall actually kept my attention, which is impressive for an action sequence since I normally get bored waiting for the story to start again.
That being said, I thought one of the main plot points was overly cynical about humanity’s deepest desires. Wondy’s big speech at the end was a bit of a word salad, and I walked away unsure what point they were actually trying to make.
The sequence on Themyscira at the beginning had a lot of wasted potential. Adding one or two beats to Diana’s story to set things up would have made a couple of reveals about her powers later in the movie feel more earned.
The character return was overly complicated. Just have him return. The way they did it felt ill-advised for a few reasons, and it didn’t come into play after the first big reveal anyway.
I don’t really have much of an opinion on Cheetah, as she felt like mostly an afterthought. Looked cool though.
I thought they did a good job with the Maxwell Lord character, but I wish they’d used somebody else from the DCU or an original character in the role. In the comics, Maxwell Lord is selfish and power-hungry, but he’s also very capable. His hubris rarely backs him into a corner like we saw in WW84. I figured they’d use Lord due to his history in the comics with Wonder Woman (she snapped his neck on live TV), they’d end up doing a riff on that. Not so much, even when they set it all up with the broadcast.
Anywho, that’s my take. What did you think?
